Atomistic and Multiscale Computational Modelling in Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry

Introduction

 

In recent years there have been enormous developments in the design of supercomputers. The increase in computing power has opened the door to the study of physical and chemical processes of interest using multiscale models and computer simulation techniques, in terms of the system size (length scale) and the duration of the process (time scale), based on the atomic-molecular elements involved. This theoretical approach has achieved a high degree of reliability and has become a fundamental tool for analysing and understanding the structure and properties of complex systems and processes.
The Interuniversity Master's Degree in Atomistic and Multiscale Computational Modelling in Physics, Chemistry and Biochemistry primarily aims to provide specialized training in the use of computational tools to study problems of physics, chemistry and biochemistry in which the structure and properties of matter at the atomic or molecular level are relevant. Thus, graduates will attain the necessary general and specific knowledge of theoretical models and simulation techniques in order to be able select the most appropriate to describe a certain system, depending on its size and the timescale over which the process property of interest occurs. The course provides training in the use of the programming tools and the knowledge required to implement the simulation techniques learned, either using standard software packages or writing the necessary applications.

The master’s degree offers adequate training to subsequently pursue a doctorate programme in a field of research in which computational modelling is relevant. Additionally, the experience it provides in the use and development of scientific software applications opens the possibility of working in R&D departments of companies in the technology sector, the study of complex systems and network monitoring, the pharmaceutical sector, or dedicated to technology and materials in fields related to the environment or energy.
