Brazil is located in the South American Platform, whose basement completed its consolidation between the Upper Proterozoic and early Palaeozoic with the end of the Brasiliano orogenic cycle. The last major tectonic event that affected the country was the break-up of the Gondwana (Pangea) supercontinent, completed during the Cretaceous, which led to the opening of the South Atlantic Ocean and affected the eastern edge of the continent. Because of its location at the center of a tectonic plate, Brazil presents relative tectonic stability, without active volcanism, recent orogenesis or significant seismic activity.
