The temporal correlation between Continental Flood Basalts and various paleoenvironmental crises including mass extinctions is now well established. Specific mechanisms relating these phenomena remain poorly constrained. Although volatile fluxes are implicated, a central question today is whether the volatiles (e.g. carbon dioxide and sulfates) are strictly magmatic, or derived from degassing of other sources. Current geochronological constraints are inadequate to provide atmospheric volatile loading rates with useful precision, and will be a future focus.
