The earthquake on 6 April 2009 (Mw 6.1) hit the town of L'Aquila severely damaging fine art and historical heritage monuments and causing enormous loss of private property. The mainshock was preceded by foreshock activity that began in January 2009 and culminated with two events with Mw ≥3.9 on 30 March and a second one only a few hours before the mainshock. A seismotectonic study of the L'Aquila 2009 seismic sequence (Central Italy, Mw=6.1) based on the integration of structural and seismological data is presented. The surface tectonic setting of the late Quaternary faults in the epicentral areas (the Paganica, Mt. Gorzano and Montereale faults) was defined by integrating data from the literature with original field work. The 3D geometry of the faults at depth, as a map view of the depth contour lines, were reconstructed using high-resolution aftershock distributions and extrapolated to the surface through correlation with the outcropping extensional fault system.
