Descripció:
The M7 earthquake of 12 January 2010 in Haiti devastated the capital city of Port-au-Prince, killing at least 230,000 people and leaving over 1 million homeless. Based on the location of the epicenter and preliminary seismic data, it was presumed that this earthquake was caused by slip on the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden Fault (EPGF), the major strike-slip plate-boundary fault near Port-au-Prince. More detailed analysis, including field studies and modeling of multiple datasets, suggests that the EPGFZ was not the source; the earthquake occurred instead on a previously unrecognized, blind fault. This conclusion implies seismic hazard associated with the EPGF near Port-au-Prince remains high.
