Understanding the stability and geochemical behavior of organic compounds at high temperatures and pressures is of major interest for such important processes in Earth Sciences as the generation of petroleum from hydrocarbon source rocks, the formation of uranium and other ore deposits, or the synthesis of organic species in marine hydrothermal systems and in meteorites. I will illustrate with a few examples how thermodynamics allows us to propose a quantitative description of these processes.
