SEMINARIS DE LA FACULTAT DE GEOLOGIA I L'INSTITUT DE CIÈNCIES DE LA TERRA 'JAUME ALMERA'
On 16 of August 2014, a seismic event started in the volcano-tectonic system of Bardarbunga central Iceland. So far there have been 5 eruptions, on continuous since the 31st of August. Activity is rapid and voluminous and in the past 5 months about 2.3 km3 of magma has been erupted on to surface north of the glacier Vatnajökull. At present the lava field covers about 85 km2. Effusive intensity has been from around 300 m3/s to about 10m3/s at present time. In this lecture we shall discuss the course of events, origin of magma and possible future scenarios.
