Welcome

The Department of Biomedical Sciences is located at the Medical Campus-Clínic where the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences has its headquarters. The Department is involved in research and teaching in the Degrees of Medicine, Biomedical Engineering and Biomedical Sciences, and Pharmacy as well as in Masters and Doctorate programmes. Some IPs are also members of Research Institutes such as Creatio-UB, Bosch i Gimpera Foundation, Clínic Foundation, HUBC, IBEC, IDIBAPS (CELLEX, CEK), IN2UB, Nanotecnology and Neuroscience Catalan Institute, Josep Carreras Institute, UB Neuroscience Institute, UB Science Park and others. This website is designed to introduce the visitors and especially to the students of our Department to the research, teaching and the administrative activities that we carry out. Its aim is also to serve as a communication tool between the Department and university students, graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, teachers and administrative staff.

Our Department is dedicated to understanding fundamental physiological processes and translating them into the clinics.

The current objectives of the Department of Biomedical Sciences remain the same as those that previously showed by renowned professors such as Coll Pujol, Bellido, Ramón y Cajal and Pi i Sunyer, predecessors and relevant members of the Department more than one hundred years ago. The scientific intuition and the curiosity that these researchers had in their studies are still present in the current staff of the Department. The enthusiasm and curiosity is guided through the rigorous application of the scientific method (hypothesis and research based on experimentation). What has changed drastically in recent years are the experimental tools available for the study of the different aspects of the biomedical sciences. Our traditional measurement methods, such as measurements of blood pressure, respiratory rate, urine output, hormone levels, electroencephalograms, have been complemented by molecular biology techniques, advanced genetic manipulations and sophisticated measurements of computing and electronics, proteomics, and nanotechnology that should enable a better understanding of human health and illness. There is still much work to do and therefore we welcome at the Department to all who want to contribute to this mission.

The teaching activity is carried out at different Campus: Clínic, Bellvitge and Pedralbes, and teaching is given in a variety of degrees.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences has an important scientific activity that is performed by different research groups led by PIs. The research topics include biophysics and nanotechnology, immunology, neurodegenerative and connective tissue diseases, cell signaling and membrane trafficking, cell proliferation and differentiation, oncogenesis, and cell therapy and regenerative medicine.

The Department of Biomedical Sciences is located at the Clínic-Casanova Campus of the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona (Casanova, 143). The Faculty of Medicine is also located next to the Hospital Clínic i Provincial de Barcelona.
