The research of our group is focused on the study of the structure and function of cell surface receptors involved in the regulation of innate and adaptive immune responses and its modulation during viral infections. More specifically, we are interested in receptors of the immunoglobulin superfamily and, in particular, in the SLAM (Signaling Molecule for the Activation of Lymphocytes) molecules. The SLAM receptors play a crucial role in host-pathogen interactions and also in autoimmunity and cancer. We are analyzing the pathophysiology of these molecules both in vitro and in animal models. We mainly work with cytomegalovirus (CMV), a clinical relevant human pathogen. One of our main objectives is the identification of new molecular targets for the treatment of immune-based pathological processes.

The group is organized into two research teams focused on the following topics:

  1. Functional characterization of leukocyte membrane receptors and development of new immunomodulatory therapeutic strategies (PI: Pablo Engel)
  2. Characterization of the biology and mechanisms of immuno-invasion of cytomegalovirus (PI: Ana Angulo)
