John Stone Awarded Charles J. Cole Fellowship at Yale's Lewis Walpole Library
Dr John Stone, Serra Hunter fellow and associate professor at the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures and English Studies, has been awarded the one-month Charles J. Cole fellowship for research on the project "Networks of Amateur Hispanism, 1750-1808" at Yale University's Lewis Walpole Library. Dr Stone's project looks at interest in the Spanish language, literature and intellectual life among individuals with no apparent links to the Spanish-speaking world, such as Mrs Piozzi and her daughter Hester Maria, who both translated into and from Spanish.
The Lewis Walpole Library specialises in eighteenth-century holdings and research materials. The fellowship, which may be taken up at any time between July 2019 and June 2020, includes occasional use of Yale's Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library, one of the world's largest literary archives.
