Abstract:

This presentation will aim to address the acquisition of speech from a complex multilingual perspective by offering an overview of recent findings and contributing to the discussion on theoretical and methodological considerations in research on L3 phonological acquisition. As the discipline grows dynamically, the methodologies employed advance, yet certain aspects continue to pose a challenge, e.g. longitudinal designs; different types of L3 learners (heritage, bilingual vs. foreign language learners); phonological proficiency assessment; comprehensive measures of production and perception; task complexity, etc. From a theoretical perspective, the applicability of the established L3 morphosyntactic models to L3 phonological data is being questioned and alternative explanatory approaches are proposed, including the Dynamic System Theory framework (e.g. Kopečková et al. 2016), an L3 extension of the Perceptual Assimilation Model (originally by Best 1995) or the Natural Growth Theory of Acquisition (Dziubalska-Kołaczyk and Wrembel 2017). The talk will focus on an overview of recent findings from a longitudinal international “Multi-Phon” project on cross-linguistic influence (CLI) in phonological acquisition by multilingual adolescents. New insights will be offered into developmental trajectories of the L3 and L2 phonologies; the production and perception interface; complex cross-linguistic interactions over time; interindividual variation as well as the L1 group and language proficiency effects.
