Master's in Journalism BCN-NY Celebrates Its 25th Anniversary with a Commemorative Event
On April 10, 2025, the Aula Capella at the Faculty of Philology and Communication hosted a commemorative event marking the 25th anniversary of the Master's in Journalism BCN-NY. The ceremony was attended by Joan Guàrdia, Rector of the University of Barcelona; Jelani Cobb, Dean of the Columbia Journalism School; Frederic Vincent, current director of the master's program; Josep Cuní, founding director; and Roberto Herrscher, the program's first director.
The master's program offers students a globally oriented, practical, and professional journalistic education, supported by a highly competent faculty with strong ties to major media outlets. It is the only program outside the United States accredited by the Columbia Journalism School, a global leader in journalism and the institution behind the Pulitzer Prizes
During the event, Josep Cuní shared the origins of the collaboration with Columbia Journalism School, which led to the creation of the master's program. He emphasized their commitment to a project centered on journalism, rigor, and credibility.
Roberto Herrscher highlighted the quality of education provided, focusing on teaching students to investigate truthfully, cite sources, acknowledge mistakes, write, and produce content with rigor and credibility.
Alumna Jessica Mouzo, a journalist at El País, delivered an emotional speech recalling her time in the program. She mentioned that whenever faced with a blank page or uncertainty, she returns to the master's teachings, remembering the humility required in journalism and the importance of continuous learning.
Frederic Vincent, the current director, critically assessed common errors in journalism, such as neglecting reading, laziness, bias, relying on the same sources, and lack of verification. He reaffirmed the program's commitment to teaching students to tell stories with both beauty and challenges.
Jelani Cobb expressed honor in attending the 25th-anniversary celebration and praised the strong bond between the University of Barcelona and Columbia Journalism School.
Rector Joan Guàrdia emphasized the importance of journalism for democratic societies, urging professionals to uphold responsibility, truth, and science as enduring values.
