Requirements to be met in order to request MITD:

  1. The doctorand has carried out a minimum three-month stay outside Spain in a higher education institution or in a prestigious research centre, in which he has carried out training activities or research activities linked to the research plan that he is preparing. The stay and the activities, which must have been previously authorised by the Academic Commission for the programme, must be accredited with the corresponding certificate issued by the person responsible for the research group of the bodies where they have been carried out. This information must be incorporated into the doctorand's activities document.
  2. That part of the doctoral thesis, at least the summary and conclusions, has been written and presented in one of the usual languages for scientific communication in its field of knowledge, distinct from any of the official languages in Spain. This rule does not apply when stays, reports and experts come from a Hispanic or Catalan-speaking country. Compliance with this requirement is accredited by a certificate issued by the president of the doctoral thesis court.
  3. A minimum of two PhD experts belonging to some institution of higher education or non-Spanish research institute have informed the thesis. Compliance with this requirement is accredited by the presentation of two favourable reports by two experts on the thesis prior to the defence.
  4. That at least one expert belonging to some institution of higher education or research center of non-Spanish research, with the degree of doctor, and different from the person responsible for the stay mentioned in section a, has been part of the tribunal evaluating the thesis. In order to meet this requirement, none of the persons responsible who have certified the stays of inquiry or the activities carried out, in accordance with what is specified in paragraph a, may be part of the court. This requirement is accredited by the presentation of a copy of the Doctor's degree act, in which the evaluating court of the doctoral thesis is registered.
  5. The defence of the thesis must take place at the University of Barcelona, or, in the case of joint doctoral programmes, at any of the participating universities or in the terms that identify the collaboration agreements.
