Saint George's Day at the UB: roses, books and more

Once more, the faculties of the University of Barcelona have prepared many activities to celebrate Saint George’s Day. The Language Dynamization Network has prepared a new edition of Primavera de la Llengua (Language’s Spring), which includes activities, award ceremonies and exhibitions in the different faculties of the UB. Also, Editions and Publications of the UB and Voluntariat UB will place book and rose stands.

 

Book stands and signatures

Saint George’s tradition fills Catalan streets up with roses and books, and Editions and Publications of the UB, like every year, will place a book stand on April 23 in the corner at Rambla de Catalunya/c. Provença. The stand will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. and there will be all the new available titles, a wide range of the books of the University of Barcelona, and some authors will be signing their books on science, culture or topical issues.

The signatures will start at 11 a.m. with Ramon Vidal de Besalú’s Obra Completa, by Anton M. Espadaler, who translated and edited his work. This will be presented on April 24, in a tribute to Espadaler on the occasion of the book and his retirement. The activity, carried out by Isabel de Riquer, Miriam Cabré and Espadaler himself, will take place at 7 p.m. in the staff room of the Carner building (Faculty of Philology).

The stand of Editions and Publications of the UB will also have the following authors signing new books: Eulàlia and Mariona Vernet, editors of Ordo Virtutum by Hildegarda de Bingen; Carles Mancho, author of El Brodat de la Creació de la catedral de Girona; Antoni Martí Monterde, co-editor of Comparatistes sense comparatisme. La literature comparada a Catalunya; Domènec Corbella i Llobet, author of Vallis Fecunda. Paisatges de Vallfogona de Riucorb; Xavier Ferrer, with Barcelona Breeding Bird Atlas; Neus Nogué and Eulàlia Salvat, co-editors of Joan Solà, una memòria viva; Diego Sola, author of El cronista de China. Juan González de Mendoza, entre la mission, el imperio y la historia; Ida Mauro, Milena Viceconte and Joan-Lluís Palos, co-editors of Visiones Cruzadas. Los virreyes de Nápoles y la imagen de la Monarquía de España en el Barroco; Jaume Folch with El naufragi dels records. Què hi ha darrere de malalties com l’Alzheimer?; Carles Lalueza-Fox, with La forja genètica d’Europa. Last, at 8 p.m., there will be a poetry reading with poems from Ramon Vidal de Besalú’s Obra Completa and Hildegarda de Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum, with Eulàlia Ara playing the cello. Times of authors signing books are listed here.

In addition, like every year, Editions and Publications of the UB offers a 40 % discount to all PDI and PAS members of the University of Barcelona for the books in its catalogue.

 

A supportive Saint George’s Day

For the fifth year in a row, the University of Barcelona joins the campaign named “Recicla Cultura”, an initiative from Servei Solidari Foundation that promotes book donation so that other people can buy them for a symbolic price on Saint George’s. The collected books will be sold in the stands that, on the occasion of the festivity, the University will place on April 18 and 19 in five centers: Philosophy, Geography and History CRAI Library, Law CRAI Library, Bellvitge Campus CRAI Library, and Mundet Campus CRAI Library. Books can be bought with a donation and the collected money will be assigned to Servei Solidari Foundation to fund literacy and language courses, which are organized by this entity, and from which around 2,000 people at risk of social exclusion can benefit every year.

Also, Voluntariat UB has also joined the campaign called “Roses contra l’oblit”, promoted by the entity Amics de la Gent Gran. The raised money will go to programs on helping old people who live alone.

 

Raval Campus

Activities for Saint George’s will start a week before the festivity with activities like those in the faculties of Geography and History and Philosophy, which organize three literature afternoons on April 17, 18 and 19 between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., in which the teaching staff of the faculties will present their publications.

Also, on Tuesday, April 24, at 11 a.m., in the Raval campus, together with the Language Services, they will organize a language gymkhana to test the participants’ knowledge on several fields of the humanistic knowledge.

 

Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science

As part of the Matefest – Infofest, on Wednesday April 18, the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science will organize a contest with questions on the terminology of these disciplines, to award those who get the highest number of right answers, and another prize will be raffled among the participants.

 

Mundet Campus

On Wednesday April 19, Mundet Campus will hold a day with several activities, such as the exchange of poems for a piece of cake, an interactive world map to recommend books from around the world, a literature game, or tables for book exchanges. Also, there will be the award ceremony for the 7th Round Gymkhana, which has an online questionnaire with fifteen questions on general culture, language and the Mundet Campus. The 13th Emili Mira Prize to language quality will also be awarded.

 

Faculty of Biology

In Biology, they prepared the Saint George’s Cultural Week with three conferences by experts. On April 19, Jaume Piera, researcher at Natusfera, will start the cycle with “La Biomarató de Barcelona, una eina útil per a l’estudi I la gestió de la biodiversitat?”. On April 25, Albert Bosch, from the Department of Genetics, Microbiology and Statistics, will talk about “La grip espanyola de 1918” and on May 3, Xavier Bellés, lecturer and researcher of the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (CSIC-UPF) will close the cycle with the conference “Darwin i l’expressió de les emocions”.

Also, from April 24 to May 31 the exhibition “Exponatura 2018” will be open in the Faculty and on May 3, there will be the award ceremony for the 2nd Contest on Short Stories at 12 noon in the Aula Magna.

 

Faculty of Physics

On the occasion of Saint George’s Day, the Faculty of Physics organized the fifth edition of the contest Paraules de la Física. Its participation registration period is open until April 22. The award ceremony will take place during the day.

 

Faculty of Fine Arts

On April 20, in the Fine Arts CRAI Library at 12 noon, the faculty’s Saint George’s poster for 2018, by Víctor Roig Jardí, will be presented. Also, the exhibition ARTalCRAI will be open, and will be available in eighteen headquarters of CRAI UB. In the exhibition the Fine Arts Collection shows seventeen works by students of the Faculty in the most contemporary artistic lines.

Moreover, on the occasion of Saint George’s and with the start of spring, the exhibition “Quan els cirerers floreixin” has been prepared, an exhibition with works by Joan Amigó, which can be visited until April 27 in the exhibition room of the Faculty.

 

Faculty of Economics and Business

On Saint George’s the patio of the Faculty of Economics and Business will hold, between 12 noon and 2.30 p.m., several book presentations by lecturers of the centre, the castellers of the group els Arreplegats de Zona Universitària, a book exchange table, and “Poemes amb accent”, with international students and the Office for International Relations of the Faculty. Also, the award ceremony for the Ensaimada Lingüística 2018 and the social network contests, organized by l’Economista will take place as well.

 

Faculty of Library and Information Science

From April 24 to 27, the Faculty of Library and Information Science will offer a book exchange table to promote book exchange among the members of the faculty.

 

Faculty of Chemistry

After Saint George’s Day, on April 24, the Faculty of Chemistry will raffle books among those who participate in the initiative Inspira’t, organized by the Language Dynamization Commission of the center.

 

Faculty of Philology

Apart from the “Imatges del Quixot” exhibition, which can be visited from April 20 to May 4 in the Philology CRAI Library, the Faculty of Philology has organized the second edition of the contest “Have you read Don Quixote?”, which will test people’s knowledge on Cervante’s novel on April 24. The contest will take place at 10 a.m. in the room Joan Maragall, and will end with a poetry reading.

Moreover, on May 3, at 7 p.m. there will be the award ceremony for the 25th Carme Serrallonga Award, and in Pati de Lletres, there will be Envers: 5th UB poet reading.

 

Faculty of Law

On April 24, 25 and 26 the Faculty of Law will hold the Setmana Cultural de Dret, which will start on Tuesday with two conferences in Sala de Graus (boardroom), one on the freedom of expression and mass culture, by Juan Soto Ivars and Laura Díez Bueno, and the other about avalanches and off-piste safety by Aitor Díaz. On Wednesday, April 25, there will be two sessions of film discussion and the book presentation for WAD-RAS by Joan Miquel Capell. The following day the Mediation Room will be open, and the faculty will also offer a guided tour to the Güell Pavilions. The day will close with a Jazz concert and the award ceremony for the 4th Short Story Contest.

On Wednesday April 25, the Faculty of Law will offer a book exchange table and the activity “Exchange a verse for a piece of cake and chocolate”, which encourages participants to write a verse or sentence and exchange them for a piece of chocolate cake in the bar of the Faculty.
