University of Barcelona

Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Cosmology

Course curriculum

The standard master program consists of 60 ECTS distributed in the following way:

  • 12 ECTS in two semestral mandatory Master subjects (Advanced Cosmology and Mathematical and Statistical Techniques).

  • 12 ECTS in semestral mandatory speciality subjects

  • 12 ECTS in semestral elective subjects

  • 24 ECTS in a Final Master Project that must be carried out in the second half of the master

The latter is an introductory research project and lasts one semester.

The Astrophysics, Particle Physics and Cosmology Master Degree offers two specialisations:

  • Astrophysics and Space Sciences

  • Particle Physics and Gravitation

Astrophysics and Space Sciences focuses on the study of the macrocosmos, i.e., in the various astronomical objects and their associated physics, whereas Particle Physics and Gravitation centres on the microcosmos, i.e., on the structure of matter and their fundamental interactions. This notwithstanding, it is possible to design an interdisciplinary course by selecting subjects of both specialties.

This Master is designed primarily for physics graduates who have already completed subjects in the specific areas covered by the Master's degree. Students graduted in other scientific areas may be asked by the Coordinating Committee of the Master to enroll in extra courses (Formative Complements) up to a maximum of 30 extra ECTS in accordance with their training.
