Information for the student – Meteorology and Climate Sciences (new)

Highlights

Meteorology and climate sciences are essential disciplines for understanding atmospheric variability and anticipating its impacts on society and ecosystems. The current intensification of climate change and the rise in extreme weather events pose unprecedented scientific and societal challenges, recognized, as recognized by both the periodic reports of the IPCC and the awarding of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics for advances in climate system studies.

In this context the University of Barcelona offers the Master's Degree in Meteorology and Climate Sciences, an updated and expanded version of the previous Master's Degree in Meteorology, aimed at training highly qualified professionals capable of addressing emerging challenges in weather and climate prediction, risk management, and climate change analysis.

The master's degree is especially aimed at university graduates interested in gaining an in-depth understanding of atmospheric and climatic processes, along with an awareness of the scientific and socio-economic challenges involved in modeling physical atmospheric phenomena, accurately representing observational data, and comprehensively assessing climate change under various future scenarios. The program offers two distinct specializations:

  1. Fundamental specialization, oriented toward basic research, numerical modeling, and advanced studies of the physical and dynamical processes in the atmosphere and ocean.
  2. Applied specialization, focused on operational meteorology, communication, prediction, and monitoring of severe weather phenomena, as well as sector-specific applications (e.g., air pollution, risk management, agriculture).

These two specializations, along with an open academic track, provide a flexible structure enabling students to tailor their studies according to their personal interests and professional objectives. At the same time, the program ensures solid and coherent training aligned with international standards set by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
