Today, Wednesday October 4, several Catalan institutions and entities have created an independent commission to promote dialogue and mediation between Catalonia and Spain, willing to find an agreement to solve the political situation in the country. The opening event for this initiative, coordinated by the Barcelona Bar Association (ICAB) and its Dean, M. Eugènia Gay, had the participation of all representatives of the institutions that offer their support: the rector of the University of Barcelona, Joan Elias; the president of the legal bar of Catalonia (Consell de l’Advocacia Catalana), Carles McCragh; the secretary-general of UGT in Catalonia, Camil Ros; the secretary-general of Workers’ Commissions in Catalonia, Javier Pacheco; the rector of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Margarita Arboix; the president of PIMEC, Josep González; the president of the Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona, Miquel Valls; the president of the United Nations Association of Spain, Eduard Sagarra, and the dean of the Economists Association in Catalonia (Col•legi d’Economistes de Catalunya), Joan B. Casas. Apart from these entities, there may be other entities of the Catalan civil society over the next hours and days.

The participating institutions –which are totally independent and apolitical- believe there is an urgent need to find an exit for this growing tension between the State administration and the Catalan one.

In order to carry the mediation out, the Commission believes it is crucial that both parts –the Catalan Government and the Spanish Government- renounce to one of their postulates. Within these lines, the Commission has set the starting point to start mediation as the restoration of the Spanish law enforcement in Catalonia to the previous situation of the acts that occurred as a consequence of the call for the 1-O, and any unilateral solution without a wide democratic agreement should be ruled out.

Below is the statement “Per la creació d’una Comissió Independent per a la Mediació, el Diàleg i la Conciliació” (To create an Independent Commission for Mediation, Dialogue and Conciliation), in Catalan.
