Types of pilgrimages, motivations and ritualization

The study of pilgrimages is understood in RelNet from a broad point of view. It involves any type of trip made for a religious reason, regardless of the distance and time necessary to carry it out. This inclusive perspective is necessary when analysing the phenomenon in ancient societies, in which religion permeates all aspects of life and society.

a) Study of the typology of pilgrimages, their causes and purposes: Many trips could have the reason of “participation in a system of religious beliefs”, but also other purposes with religion being only a pretext or framework. Pilgrimages can have different causes, so in principle we should expect to find a variety of types.

b) Identification of the ritualized aspects of the trip, such as the existence of sacrifices and offerings, the type of objects that were used (both means of  transport and objects related to worship), the presence of recitations or musical performances or dances, the use of a specific wardrobe, the consumption of a specific type of food, and any provisions for the trip. Since rituals of this type could be performed at different points along the route, at “way stations” or along sacred paths that lead to sanctuaries, this is a phenomenon that must be analysed in relation to the geospatial aspects of sacred movement.
