On May 13th, the Extraordinary Doctorate Awards were presented to recognize the best doctoral theses of the 2022–2023 academic year. We are proud to announce that two of our PhD in Sociology alumni, Dr. Lionel Sebastián Delgado and Dr. Glòria Guirao, received this prestigious award.
Dr. Lionel Sebastián Delgado was awarded for his thesis “Cuerpos, espacios y poder en movimiento. Diferencias de género y clase en los desplazamientos juveniles de dos barrios de Barcelona”. His research analyzes how youth mobility in Barcelona is shaped by gender and social class differences. Based on a qualitative study conducted in the Sarrià and Porta neighborhoods, the thesis examines physical movements, social representations, and in itinere practices, highlighting how structural inequalities affect the everyday mobility of young people.
Dr. Glòria Guirao received the award for her thesis “¿Salir a triunfar? Las migraciones de los artistas y los intermediarios del arte contemporáneo españoles en la Unión Europea (1986-2018)”. Her research explores the migration patterns of Spanish contemporary artists and intermediaries within the European Union, particularly to cities like Paris, Berlin, and London. The study investigates how free movement and mobility programs have influenced these relocations, along with the motivations, strategies, and social inequalities that shape international artistic careers and their ties to the Spanish art scene.
Congratulations, Lionel and Glòria! The UB School of Sociology is truly proud of your outstanding achievements.
