This honor comes as a result of the recommendation by the Division of Soft Matter (DSOFT) of the American Physical Society at the September council meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Fernandez-Nieves is celebrated for his pioneering studies on the interplay between geometry, topology, and order in complex fluids. His work has spanned a wide range of topics, from geometrically frustrated liquid crystals to highly confined colloidal hydrogels, toroidal-shaped drops and gels, drop formation in microfluidics, and the mechanics and dynamics of fire ant collectives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This honor is all the more significant because the number of recommended nominees in each year may not exceed one half of a percent of the then-current membership of the Society, excluding student members.
