Last month, results from this paper Lifecycle analysis of the gender gap in paid and unpaid work by household structure were featured in the Spanish newspaper, La Vanguardia.
When comparing couples with and without children, it is observed that the former work longer hours than the latter: an average of 14.7 hours per day compared to 13. The family generosity indicator, which is the value of all the money, work, and care that is transferred to others compared to what one consumes throughout their life, reveals the existence of this parenthood gap. Parents are more generous than those who are not: a 77% generosity ratio compared to 33% for men, and 61% compared to 29% for women. It means that over half of parents’ income – from their work inside and outside home – is not for their own entertainment but consumed by other household members, something that does not occur for those without children.
