  • Despite its simple appearance, the sponges are more complex genetics of what we might expect. In fact, the genomes of these living beings are genes involved in complex processes that until now thought only present in higher animals, such as signaling, driving neuronal and epithelial development, among others.
This study reveals a researcher Ana Riesgo Department of Animal Biology and Biodiversity Research Institute of the University of Barcelona (IRBio). Their study, signed jointly by experts from the University of Alberta (Canada) and Harvard University (USA) has been published in the journal Molecular Biology and Evolution. As Ana Riesgo explains itself, to understand the function of these genes in unexpected sponges will enable new assumptions of how these beings evolved in more complex animals.
