Tribute to the people repressed by Franco's regime

The UB will pay tribute to the people of the UB community punished during the dark period of dictatorship on 26 January

On 26 January, at 12:00, the University of Barcelona will pay tribute to the people of the UB community who were repressed during Franco’s regime (1939-1975). The event, which will take place in the auditorium of the Historical Building, will count on the attendance of the minister for Universities, Joan Subirats; the Catalan minister for Research and Universities, Joaquim Nadal; and the Catalan minister for Justice, Rights and Memory, Gemma Ubasart.

On 26 January 1939, a guerrilla of Francoist soldiers took possession of the Historical Building.

The year 1966 marked another turning point in the anti-Franco fight at the University: the Democratic Union of Students of the UB (SDEUB) was created at the convent of the Sarrià Capuchins, which unleashed another wave of repression by the then rector, Francisco García-Valdecasas.

The people to be honoured on 26 January, who were students or professors at the University, were punished during the long period of Franco’s dictatorship for their political ideas and their commitment to freedom and democracy.

The event will include a talk by Carlos Santacana, professor of the Department of History and Archaeology, who will review this historic moment at the University. Afterwards, plaques will be presented to the honourees.

Mari Carmen Serra, granddaughter of the UB rector Jaume Serra-Húnter (1931-1933), exiled in Mexico after the Civil War, and Robert Rodríguez Roisín, emeritus professor of Medicine, who played a prominent role in the SDEUB, will give a voice to those who suffered reprisals at the University of Barcelona during the Franco regime.

The event will be available online on UBTV.
