Introduction

The bachelor's degree in Literary Studies at the University of Barcelona builds students' skills in the fields of literary theory and criticism, encouraging them to enquire and reflect, to acquire specific analytical skills and to apply aspects of genre theory, hermeneutics, poetics, rhetoric and the methodology of comparative literature. The bachelor's degree in Literary Studies provides interdisciplinary theoretical and practical training in the areas of comparative literature, literary theory and culture studies. The degree builds students' skills in the fields of literary theory and criticism, encouraging them to enquire and reflect, to acquire specific analytical skills and to apply aspects of genre theory, hermeneutics, poetics, rhetoric and the methodology of comparative literature. It provides training in literature from all periods and genres, from both a universal and comparative perspective. It likewise provides a solid grounding in language and promotes critical analysis of literature, enabling students to recognize all literary periods, the different genres, and the potential relationships between them.

Objectives and competences

Objectives

  • Provide a solid training in theoretical and practical aspects of literature from a universal and comparative perspective.
  • Develop competences and skills related to literary theory and criticism, such as a reflective and speculative attitude, the acquisition of methods of literary analysis and the use of genre theory, hermeneutics, the poetic-rhetorical tradition and the methodology of comparative literature.
  • Provide the basis for literary research.

  • Communicative ability (the ability to understand and express oneself orally and in writing in Catalan, Spanish, and a third language, mastering specialised language/the ability to search, use, disseminate, and integrate information).

  • Demonstrate the ability to interrelate various aspects of literary theory and comparative literature.

  • Solid language skills (general reading and writing skills, and listening and speaking in an academic context).
  • The ability to work towards goals.
  • Critical and reasoning skills, the ability to relate concepts and extrapolate from these, and summary and analytical skills.
  • Memory, reading culture and personal interest in intellectual development.
  • Interest in language and literature.
  • Knowledge of the language and literature in which you wish to specialize, of other languages that will be related to the study of these and of IT tools at a user level.

Placements

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment.They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
