Introduction

The bachelor's degree in Modern Language and Literature provides comprehensive training in language, literature and culture, enabling students to specialize in one of the many profiles available in today's multilingual and multicultural environment. The training focuses on two core areas of language, while also providing specific knowledge about linguistics, literature and culture in the chosen areas.
The bachelor's degree in Modern Language and Literature provides training in two core areas of language use: a command of instrumental language and a solid grounding in the specific linguistics, literature and culture of a given milieu. The course delivers expert knowledge of the chosen language, literature and culture for each pathway, thereby facilitating graduates' employment in any language-related profession anywhere in the European Union, including language teaching, research, publishing, literary criticism, language consulting, cultural mediation and management, etc. The training focuses on the in-depth study of and research on the various fields of philology in the areas of both literature and linguistics and modern languages. Students acquire a comprehensive understanding of language, literature and culture, allowing them to specialize in one of the many profiles available in today's multilingual and multicultural world.

Objectives

The scientific foundation in modern language, literature and culture that is required for professional practice in a broad range of related disciplines in today's plurilingual and multicultural society.
Skills in two different language areas: proficiency in the use of an instrumental language and a solid knowledge base in the language, literature and culture of each area.

  • Communicative ability (the ability to understand and express oneself orally and in writing in Catalan, Spanish, and a third language, mastering specialised language/the ability to search, use, disseminate, and integrate information).

  • Ethical commitment (critical and self-critical capacity/ability to demonstrate attitudes consistent with ethical and deontological conceptions).

  • Analyse and interpret the relationships between linguistics, literature, and culture.

  • Solid language skills (general reading and writing skills, and listening and speaking in an academic context).
  • The ability to work towards goals.
  • Critical and reasoning skills, the ability to relate concepts and extrapolate from these, and summary and analytical skills.
  • Memory, reading culture and personal interest in intellectual development.
  • Interest in learning about languages and their literary legacy.
  • Knowledge of the language and literature in which you wish to specialize, of other languages that will be related to the study of these and of the basic IT tools that are used.

Students that have studied abroad and who wish to study at the University of Barcelona may be admitted to EHEA bachelor's degree courses. Procedures for gaining admission will depend on the qualifications held by each applicant.

Placements

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment.They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
