Introduction

The bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Barcelona provides general academic training in the knowledge, understanding, analysis and interpretation of human and, to a lesser degree, animal behaviour, as well as basic psychological assessment, diagnosis and intervention skills.
The bachelor's degree in Psychology at the University of Barcelona trains future professionals, giving them the scientific and technical knowledge to promote health and quality of life, and skills that can be used to resolve problems in areas of health, education, social work, labour relations and law. Students acquire knowledge of psychological processes, evolutionary development stages, the biological foundations of human behaviour and psychological functions, as well as their psychosocial principles. They likewise receive training in the various methods of research and data analysis, as well as the main psychological assessment, diagnostic and intervention methods in various fields. Psychology is a profession that provides a service for people and society in general, working to ensure social well-being. The bachelor's degree qualifies graduates to enter the job market directly or go on to pursue the master's degree in General Health Psychology, which will qualify them to practice professionally in the field of healthcare.

Basic competences (CB)

  • Capacity to demonstrate knowledge and understanding in an area of study based on the grounding provided in general secondary education. The level is that of advanced textbooks, but also includes aspects relating to the latest knowledge in the field of study.
  • Capacity to apply knowledge to your work in a professional way, and to develop certain competences that can be used to formulate and defend arguments and to solve problems related to the area of study.   
  • Capacity to gather and interpret relevant data (normally within the study area) to make judgements based on reflection on relevant social, scientific or ethical issues.
  • Ability to transmit mathematical information, ideas, problems and solutions to specialists and non-specialists.
  • Learning skills required for further study with a high degree of independence.

Specific competences

  • Capacity to learn about, understand and analyse behaviour on the basis of a functional knowledge of psychological processes, taking into account the fundamental biological, evolutionary, sociocultural and contextual principles.
  • Ability to detect cases in which psychological intervention is required (identify and analyse the needs and demands of individuals, groups or organizations in different settings, and establish the necessary priorities).
  • Ability to conduct a psychological evaluation (formulate and test hypotheses on the demands, problems and needs of subjects/assess, contrast and choose between different data collection methods and procedures and the most suitable instruments for each situation or context/obtain and organize information about the problems, demands and needs of subjects, applying the appropriate techniques/prepare and write technical reports on the results of psychological evaluations, research or specific services, taking into account the end user/apply the correct professional criteria in making psychological diagnoses).
  • Capacity to advise on, intervene and mediate in processes of psychological evaluation and treatment (set realistic goals and draw up a work plan/identify the individual, environmental, contextual and procedural variables that make exert and influence and detect signs of resistance to change/apply the methods or strategies outlined in the work plan, in agreement with the goals/demonstrate flexibility, respect and discretion in psychological interventions, consultation, mediation and treatment/obtain and organize relevant to the analysis and assessment of interventions).
  • Basic research skills (use different sources of written information/apply the different strategies required to obtain the correct information and assess the research requirements of each situation/gather, organize and classify data and research materials (documents, clinical histories, archives, etc) /understand the foundations of psychological research methods/analyse and critically appraise data on the basis of extensive knowledge of the discipline/understand the procedures and formal aspects involved in the dissemination of psychology research).
  • Commitment to ethical and responsible professional practice (take decisions and act in accordance with the code of professional ethics in general practice and research, and understand the concept and importance of evidence-based psychology as a guarantee of professional responsibility).

Recommended applicant profile

Successfully completed school leaver studies or vocational training studies in any subject area, or a pass in the university entrance examinations for students over the age of twenty-five. Particular consideration will be shown to applicants who have completed subjects in health sciences and social sciences.

Previous years

Placements

Placements in a company or another type of organization are an integral part of university studies, providing first-hand experience of working methodologies in students' chosen professional fields.They offer invaluable practical experience for the transition into work after graduation.

Placements are supervised by tutors and subject to assessment.They are therefore included in the academic record.  There is also an option to complete non-curricular placements of up to 500 hours, which can be extended to 900 hours. For both curricular and non-curricular placements, an educational cooperation agreement is signed between the UB and the company, institution or other organization at which the placement will be carried out.
