Introduction

The bachelor's degree in Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Barcelona revives the universalist spirit of studia humanitatis, teaching students about the formation and consolidation of the main Romance language literary traditions. It offers a thorough overview of mediaeval European literature, the society that produced and enjoyed it, and its impact on Western arts and culture to this day. It prepares students to interpret and analyse Romance languages and literatures from both a synchronic and diachronic comparative perspective. It provides both theoretical and practical knowledge of two Romance languages, in addition to Catalan or Spanish, enabling students to use them for different purposes. Training is also provided in the historical evolution of Romance literature and its organization into literary genres, linguistic phenomena applied to the analysis of Romance languages, and the skills needed to apply philological editing techniques to Romance language literary texts and linguistics.
