Traditional Chinese medicine is a discipline with a long tradition whose aim is to maintain people's health and treat diseases. It has been established for over a thousand years in China and other Asian countries.

Chinese medicine is now commonly practiced worldwide, and some of its forms are recognised by the World Health Organization (WHO) due to their effectiveness and the fact that they have negligible side effects in certain disease processes. Traditional Chinese medicine is an important complementary therapy in the health field. However, it has been paid little attention in Western society, even though demand for it is increasing (one in every four people use it at some point). It should be noted that the WHO advocates a world strategy to promote the integration, regulation and supervision of traditional medicine.
This master's degree is a two-year course, and is the result of academic collaboration between the University of Barcelona, the Pompeu Fabra University and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. It will be taught entirely in English and the institutional placements will be carried out in Beijing.

Learning objectives

The master's degree offers a professional pathway, to provide medical graduates with the skills required to diagnose, treat, determine the prognosis, and monitor human diseases according to the bases, methods and protocols of traditional Chinese medicine. The aim is to provide theoretical and practical knowledge, so that graduates can care for patients according to the principles of Chinese traditional medicine, taking into account European regulations on the use of drugs.

This master's degree aims to take advantage of academic collaboration between Catalan universities and the Beijing University of Chinese Medicine, which is the leading authority in China for the teaching of traditional medicine. The degree also complements the training provided in the Faculty of Medicine in areas of traditional medicine, as proposed by the WHO.
