Objectives and competences

Plants are common components of the landscape and essential elements in the maintenance of natural ecosystems, but they are also the basis of human nutrition and of a wide variety of products and raw materials of interest in different productive sectors. The integrated knowledge of the physiological, biochemical and genetic bases associated to the growth and development of plants, as well as of the mechanisms involved in their interaction with the environment, is essential to address new biotechnological strategies of interest for very diverse industrial sectors.

In recent years, the constant advances that have taken place in the fields of molecular biology, bioinformatics and genetics have been applied with success to the research of plants. As a result, great progress has been achieved in the improvement of crop plants, both to increase agricultural production in a more sustainable way and to produce healthier foods. In addition, the knowledge obtained has allowed plants to be used as platforms for the biotechnological production of drugs and compounds of industrial interest. The main objective of the master's degree is the training of professionals working in scientific research in R&D departments of companies in the agri-food, bioenergy, pharmaceutical and cosmetic sectors.

Besides, the master's degree also prepares students to work in institutions dedicated to the conservation of plant diversity, and covers the academic training requirements of research staff who wish to pursue doctoral studies in the fields of biology, genomics and plant biotechnology. The master's degree admits graduates and holders of pre-EHEA bachelor's degrees from the fields of Biology, Environmental Sciences, Biotechnology, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacy, Agricultural or Forestry Engineering, Food Science and Technology or equivalent.

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.
