The master's degree in Physical Activity and Education is organized by the Faculty of Education with the collaboration of the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC). The course provides specific training in the educational use of motor activity in a range of contexts, and provides the knowledge and resources required for research and innovation in this field.

The master's degree in Motor Activity and Education is organized by the Faculty of Education with the collaboration of the National Institute of Physical Education of Catalonia (INEFC). The course provides specific training in the educational use of motor activity in a range of contexts, and provides the knowledge and resources required for research and innovation in this field.

The advanced training acquired over the course of the degree will enable students to reach an advanced level of competence in the development of motor education activities, physical education programmes and social interventions; to disseminate the results of their research and innovation activities; and, where appropriate, to access doctoral studies and prepare a doctoral thesis.

The master's degree addresses new training requirements in the field of motor activities, in areas such as physical activities for people with special education needs, sports for people with disabilities, social intervention, population ageing, and innovation in the traditional practices of physical education and sport. The teaching staff have therefore been selected for their expertise in various areas of psychology, health and social intervention.

The course is designed for physical education and sport education professionals, social educators and general education professionals, as well as university graduates in education and physical education who wish to continue their studies at doctoral level and carry out research in the field of physical education and sport.

Objectives

This master's degree provides the core epistemological, methodological and technical knowledge that students need for advanced research and innovation in physical education and sports. The course also complements the training of professionals already working in this field, as it provides specific knowledge and resources associated with the use of motor activity in formal and informal educational contexts. The concepts that are used illustrate the social and educational dimension of motor activity. The aim of the master's degree is to define the ways in which motor activity is manifested in both formal and informal education. This first level of definition will enables students to identify other potential expressions of motor activity, for example in health or in elite-level sport. The course examines the role of motor activity as a means of social intervention; as a key factor in education through its main expressions; and as an area for innovation and applied education research.

Competences

Students will develop the following competences:

  • Cognitive, emotional and communication skills that are essential for working in a team and managing projects in the context of physical activity, sports and physical education.

  • Capacity to design and apply research techniques in the field of physical education, establishing reasonable hypotheses and research objectives.

  • Capacity to adapt the design and method to the object of study, and to carry out research in areas related to physical education, physical activity and sports science.

  • Capacity to interpret and compare results in a discussion section, and to draw relevant conclusions that are consistent with the study objectives and with similar research in the field of physical education, physical activity and sports.

  • Capacity to plan dissemination strategies for innovation and research undertaken in the field of physical activity and sports.

  • Capacity to apply the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired to specific learning situations that arise in various contexts and areas of physical education.

  • Capacity to design strategies for applying and assessing innovation projects in the field of physical activity and sports.

  • Capacity to plan a quality educational intervention based on physical activity and other areas of educational intervention, using the knowledge and resources provided.

Applicant profile and access requirements

Recommended applicant profile

Professionals working in the field of physical education and sports, social educators and other education professionals. Holders of pre-EHEA degrees and diplomas or bachelor's degrees in the field of education and physical education who wish to pursue doctoral studies or to conduct research in physical education and sports.

Access requirements and conditions

General requirements
In accordance with Article 16 of Royal Decree 1393/2007, of 29 October, students wishing to be admitted to a university master's degree must hold one of the following qualifications:

  • Official Spanish university degree.

  • A degree issued by a higher education institution within the European Higher Education Area framework that authorizes the holder to access university master's degree courses in the country of issue.

  • A qualification issued by an institution outside the framework of the European Higher Education Area. In this case, applicants must request homologation of the degree to its equivalent official Spanish university qualification or obtain express approval from the University of Barcelona, which will conduct a study of equivalence to ensure that the degree is of a comparable level to an official Spanish university qualification and that it grants access to university master's degree study in the country of issue. Admission shall not, in any case, imply that prior qualifications have been recognized as equivalent to a Spanish master's degree and does not confer recognition for any purposes other than that of admission to the master's degree course.

Specific requirements
Students with previous qualifications relating to the area of education or physical activity and sport other than the aforementioned who therefore do not meet the admission requirements for the master's degree, could be admitted if, prior to completion of enrolment, they show that they have completed a maximum of 18 credits in bridging courses. These credits can also be taken at the same time as the master's degree: Physical Education in the Primary School (6 credits), Physical Condition and Health (6 credits), Motor Skills (6 credits).

Calendar

First period: from 1 February to 30 June 2024.
Notifications: partial resolutions in the first half of each month.

Second period: from 1 July to 4 September 2024.
Notifications: September 9.

Notes:

  • Pre-enrolment fee: A pre-enrolment fee of 30,21 euros is charged. Students who apply to more than one master's degree must pay the fee for each pre-enrolment request. Pre-enrolment requests cannot be processed until this fee has been paid.Fees will only be refunded if the master's degree in question is suspended.
  • Reserved places: A maximum of 5% of the new places of the master's degree are reserved for students who meet the general and specific access requirements and accredit the recognition of a degree of disability equal to or greater than 33%.

Selection criteria

  • Academic record for previous studies (30%).
  • Professional experience in the area of physical education and sport (30%).
  • Personal interview to assess how well the candidate's professional experience matches the recommended applicant profile (20%).
  • Professional experience in other areas of education (10%).
  • Relevance of previous studies in other postgraduate programmes (10%).

Notification

Only applications that include the required documentation and include the payment of the pre-registration fee will be assessed.

By the deadline established in the pre-enrolment calendar, the resolution of admission is notified by email or published on the website.

What can you work on ?

The growing demand for physical activity in formal and informal education has created a need for professionals with an in-depth knowledge of social intervention, innovation and research in physical activities and sports. Therefore, this master's degree enhances the training profiles of primary and secondary school teachers and of university lecturers seeking research training in these fields. In the field of social work and action, there is a need for professionals with training in sports, leisure and social intervention who are capable of working with groups that have special needs and require specialized training, including innovative professionals in prisons, in health centres, in sports centres, and in sport for people with disabilities.

The research training provided by the master's degree also satisfies growing demand for graduates interested in research in this field and in continuing their training at doctoral level. Finally, in the field of physical education, there is a growing need for professionals with training in innovation, either for direct application to education or for use in related areas in which physical activity can be used to bring about social improvements.
