Physics of Complex Systems and Biophysics

Introduction

The reductionist method of tackling a complex problem by isolating its components has lost strength and has led to a more holistic approach in which different disciplines are combined: The interactions between the components of a complex system (an organism, a city or the Internet) require a new treatment with new tools. Thus, if we consider the case of the brain, we see how this is not just a collection of interacting neurons, but a neural network that generates many emerging phenomena (memory, thought) at the frontier of physics and biology, biophysics.
Students in this master's degree will acquire extensive theoretical and practical training that will allow them to tackle a range of new and interdisciplinary applications. At the same time, those students most interested in the more formal aspects of science will also find the environment conducive to investigating the foundation of these theories. The tools and knowledge that they will acquire in this degree will open to students the doors to the leading research in complex systems, either with the realization of a doctorate, or within the professional world, in public administrations or technological companies with needs of modeling and processing of large amounts of data coming from physics, economics or biology.

Learning objectives

The main objective of the master's degree in Physics of Complex Systems and Biophysics is to provide students with the theoretical knowledge and analytical and computational tools needed to understand and model the emerging properties, collective behavior and physical aspects of complex and biological systems upon the rules that govern the individual behavior of the parts that form them, and of the complex interactions between these parts.
