CONTEMPORARY ART: CONTEXT, MEDIATION AND MANAGEMENT (2023-2024)
Learning objectives:
- To find out about the main schools of art criticism and their recent history.
- To learn how to analyse the current situation in art criticism.
- To learn the main contexts in which art criticism is used.
- To learn the functions of art criticism.
- To know how to distinguish between art criticism and information.
- To become familiar with specialized publications on contemporary art.
- To become familiar with critical tools for analysing art.
- To know how to analyse the characteristics required for a work of art to obtain intellectual property rights.
- To understand the main differences in moral rights between jurisdictions, and know how to discern between different economic rights and the right to remuneration.
- To know the limits of copyright.
- To learn some of the tools available to authors to protect their rights, such as entities that manage and register copyright, and to learn about alternative systems such as Creative Commons.
- To become familiar with documents to transmit copyright.
- To gain an introduction to curation and collection of contemporary art.
- To understand the complexity of current art production and its impact on the definition of the art system.
- To know how to analyse the discursive role of curation and the construction of collections.
- To know how to analyse the construction of the collection and the aspects that influence it: discourse, context, exposition and relationship between works and artists.
- To learn theoretical aspects that determine the practice of curation and the creation of a contemporary art collection.
- To deepen knowledge of practical aspects such as the selection of artists, the relations with institutions, the definition of projects, the art market, cataloguing of works, etc.
- To learn how to analyse some of the case studies that could be relevant in the international arena.

- Collectors, gallery owners, managers of art and heritage collections, teachers, investment consultants, museum curators, specialists in restoration and conservation, journalists, historians, critics and cultural managers.
- Professionals interested in learning about contemporary art and developing a professional career in this field.
Admission for applicants not holding a degree qualification:
The course is also open to students with no prior university education, who will acquire the same knowledge and skills and receive a specific qualification for their learner group. Information on the access requirements and other conditions can be obtained from the course directors.
