On 29 March three students from the University of Barcelona were arrested: one of them is an undergraduate degree of Physics, the other one is completing a dual degree in Physics and Mathematics and the third one is doing a Masterʼs in Teaching at Secondary Education, Vocational Training Centres and Language Schools. Their arrest took place as part of the demonstrations and riots over the last general strike.

Regarding this incident, the Rectorʼs Offices of the University of Barcelona would like to express the following:

1. When the University knew about these arrests, the attention protocol for the members of the UBʼs university community was activated. The UB has been constantly in touch, among others, with the studentsʼ legal representation, their family members, their faculties, and with the studentsʼ union to which two of the students belong to.

2. These arrests are not the result of any formal complaint by the University or of any other incident that has taken place in our institution. Therefore, the UB doesnʼt take part in the legal process.

3. The UB has publicly announced the studentsʼ good academic results, as well as the activities they carry out within the university community. The UB also states that they do not have any disciplinary proceeding.

4. We are currently working to ensure that these students will be able to pursue their studies during this academic course. Hence, the UB has contacted the different prison centres in order to give students the support they need to continue with their studies and to write their exams.

5. As a result of these contacts and the proceedings agreed by both institutions (prison centres and the UB), the undergraduate students have already received the first delivery of the books and class explanations.

6. Due to these arrests, conclusions on the incidents cannot be reached until the legal process is over. The uncertainty of the current legal situation cannot be used as an excuse to unfairly treat or attack studentsʼ unions, which stand out for their respect towards university values.

7. The Rectorʼs Offices express their understanding of the student and social movements which peacefully convey their worries and discontent with the difficult situation we are facing, as well as with some of the measures used to tackle it. The Rectorʼs Offices also condemn any kind of violent actions.

8. Finally, with all due respect to the legal institution, these Rectorʼs Offices request, as part of the guarantees of the constitutional rights and duties, the maximum diligence and promptness in the legal proceedings.
