The UB leads the I-UGR ranking of Spanish universities for scientific fields and disciplines. The University ranks first in seven of the twelve scientific fields that were analysed for the period 2007-2011, and in eight fields if the decade 2002-2011 is taken into account. This ranking, drawn up by researchers from universities of Granada and Navarra and previously known as ISI Ranking, indexes the Spanish public and private universities according to the quantity and quality of scientific research.

Hence, in this last decade the UB is leader in Physics, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Agricultural Sciences, Psychology and Education and in the field called Other Social Sciences. Besides, the UB ranks second in the field of Engineering and Mathematics. This ranking also evaluates thirty-seven scientific disciplines, thirteen of which are headed by the UB for the period 2007-2011. Microbiology and Virology, Neurosciences or Geosciences are some examples of disciplines in which the UB is the highest-placed Spanish university.

For drawing up the ranking researchers have used six bibliometric indicators of scientific output and impact and took information from databases by Thomson-Reuters (former ISI) Web of Science and by the Journal Citation Reports. The six bibliometric indicators are summarized in two indicators that represent the quantitative dimension (volume) and qualitative dimension (impact). From these two dimensions, the IFQ2A-Index (Institucional Qualitative-Quantitative Analysis Index) is obtained, which is used to rank universities in each field and discipline.

Additionally, the Research Group on Evaluation of Science and Science Communication of the University of Granada has carried out an interesting compilation of the Spanish universitiesʼ positions in the main international and national rankings, which can be found at the Meta Ranking of the Spanish Universities. According to this ranking, in 2011, the UB also ranked first among the Spanish universities for the scientific output.
