The UB Permanent Electoral Board proclaimed this morning that Joaquim Gutiérrez, Victòria Girona, Josep Antoni Bombí i Dídac Ramírez are the definitive official candidates for the Rectorʼs Offices elections of the University. Therefore, the electoral campaign has just begun, and it will last until 20th November.

The elections to the UB Rector's Offices will happen on Thursday 22nd November. It will be the third time that, according to the current regulations, the new rector will be elected by the university community through direct election and universal suffrage. If any of the candidacies do not get an overall majority on 22nd November, a second round will be done on 27th November and the candidate who gets more votes will be elected as rector.

The candidates

Joaquim Gutiérrez Fuitós (Barcelona, 1956) is professor at the Department of Physiology and Immunology of the Faculty of Biology. He was the vice-president and the president of the old Unit of Experimental Sciences and Mathematics of the UB. He was also the director of the Department of Physiology and Immunology and rectorʼs delegate commissioner of the campus of international excellence Barcelona Knowledge Campus (BKC). He has been the dean of the Faculty of Biology since December 2008. In research, he has led the research activity developed about fishʼs physiology and endocrinology. Once he finished his PhD, he stayed abroad several times (London, Seattle, Chicago and Rennes), where he continued his research experience on that field. Currently, he is the main researcher at the UB Consolidated Research Group on Regulation and Optimization of Growth of Fish Species Interesting to Aquaculture; and he has led the R+D and Innovation Network on Aquaculture of the Government of Catalonia since 2007. He has written more than one hundred articles in journals and supervised ten doctoral theses and several research projects applied to the improvement of nutrition and growth in aquaculture.

Victòria Girona Brumós (Barcelona, 1954) is professor of Physical Chemistry at the Department of Physiochemistry, and lecturer at the Faculty of Pharmacy. She was the promoter of the Group on Pedagogic Stimulation and of the Unit of Teaching Laboratories. She has participated in seventeen improvement and innovation teaching projects and in four about improving teaching quality. She got the special mention of the Plan of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation of the Spanish Higher Education System, and she has been twice honoured with the Jaume Vicens Vives award for teaching quality (2006 and 2008). She researches on chemical kinetics, drug stability and the interaction between peptides and different models of membrane. She has participated in twenty research projects and is member of the Consolidated Research Group on Peptides and Proteins: Physicochemical Studies, and of the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. She is one of the assessors of the Plan of the National Agency for Quality Assessment and Accreditation (ANECA) of the Spanish Higher Education System, and of the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency (AQU). She was vice-dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy (1995-2000), dean of that Faculty (2000-2005) and vice-rector for Teaching Staff (2005-2008).

Josep Antoni Bombí Latorre (Barcelona, 1948) is professor of Pathological Anatomy at the Faculty of Medicine, head of the Department of Pathological Anatomy, Pharmacology and Microbiology, and senior consultant of the Hospital Clínic. He is also the president of the consortium BiopolʼH in Hospitalet de Llobregat, and permanent member of the Royal Academy of Medicine of Catalonia. He has been recognized to have the following six year periods: six of research, eight of teaching and two of management. He has participated in fifteen national research projects, in some of them as the head of the research, and in eight UB teaching projects. He is expert on digestive pathology and electronic microscopy. He has published more than two hundreds articles in national and international journals, two books and twenty-three chapters; he has been speaker in more than two hundred conferences, and given more than ninety lectures. He was the president of the Medical Science Academy of Catalonia and the Balearics, the dean of the Faculty of Medicine and president of the Catalan Council of Specialities in Health Science of the Government of Catalonia. He coordinated some subjects of Medicine and Podiatry degrees and the doctoral programme of Pathological Anatomy from 1986 to 2008.

Dídac Ramírez i Sarrió (Barcelona, 1946) is professor at the Department of Mathematics for Economics, Finance and Actuarial Sciences of the Faculty of Economics and Business. He holds PhD degrees in Economics and Business Sciences and in Philosophy and Education Sciences from the UB. In 1973, he began his academic experience. He is permanent member of the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences. He has wide experience in university management at the University of Barcelona, including the positions of vice-dean (1984-1989) and vice-rector for Economics and Administration (1990-1994), and its current position of rector of the University. He has also held managing posts outside the UB: he has been president of the Catalan Society of Philosophy, treasurer of the FC Barcelona (2003), and member of the Board of Directors at the Quinta de Salut lʼAliança (2007). He has published a great number of articles in journals and scientific monographs, supervised three doctoral theses, and been the main researcher in several national and European projects; he has participated in different conferences about Economics and Philosophy. His last publication is a compilation book entitled Universitat, valors i societat.

 
More than 60,000 people called to vote

A total of 64,577 electors make up the University electoral roll. However, the vote is proportioned according to the university sector to which you belong. According to the UB statute, the percentages are: permanent teaching staff (the amount of their votes constitutes the 51 %); other teaching and research staff (9 %); students (30 %); and administrative and teaching staff (10 %).
