This year, Josep Barbosa, professor at the Department of Analytical Chemistry, supported by the Office of the Vice-Rector for Research of the UB, has coordinated the activities to spread scientific and technological knowledge that will be performed in different UBʼs sites.

Once again, secondary education students will be able to come closer to research activity through the exhibition “Research in universities”, a multimedia exhibition about the research made in Barcelona and in the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) that will go from one high school to another to encourage scientific spirit among students.

The activity “La química i el vi”, an initiative of the Faculty of Chemistry, together with the Enology Faculty of the Rovira i Virgili University (URV), plans again a guided tour to a cellar and a wine tasting in order to develop a cultural and scientific approach to the cycle of grape vines and wine. Within this proposal, on 20th November the facilities of Espelt Viticultors, in Vilajuïga (Alt Empordà) could be visited.

Moreover, as part of the activities programmed for the 2012 Science Week, the UB organizes again the Scientific Video Screening and Expertsʼ Round Table, hosted this year by the Faculties of Medicine and Pharmacy, on 13th and 16th November, respectively. 2012 is the year of Neuroscience, so the event that happened last Tuesday 13th November in the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Medicine was entitled “Neurociències i societat”. On 16th November, the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Pharmacy will host the event entitled “Els avatars de la indústria farmaceùtica”. The aim of this series is to bring closer scientific reality to general public through quality audiovisual documents which deal with topics related to Medicine and Pharmacy. All these sessions are live broadcasted through the UBTV channel, the video portal of the University of Barcelona.

The Food and Nutrition Torribera campus of the UB organises the third occasion of the festival ExpAliments. Different workshops, live experiments, games, debates and a great number of different activities will be done in order to promote food and nutrition among families, students and professionals. The festival, a free entrance one, will happen on Saturday 17th November from 10.30 a.m. to 14.30 p.m., in the Food and Nutrition campus, located in Santa Coloma de Gramenet (Torribera campus, Prat de la Riba, 171).

“Com i per què podem viatjar a lʼespai?” is the title of the lecture-workshop that will take place on 21st and 28th November at the Faculty of Mathematics. The activity is addressed to upper secondary students, and it will be an introduction to some basic concepts which describe planetsʼ motions and explain Kepleerʼs and Newtonʼs laws, and their implications for planetary motion.

On 22th November, at 6 p.m., the Aula Magna of the Faculty of Geology will host the conference “Sostenibilitat energètica a lʼactualitat”, by Mariano Marzo, professor at the Department of Stratigraphy, Paleontology and Marine Geosciences, and expert on energetic resources and geopolitics. The UB and the section of Earth Sciences of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona organises the lecture.

From 28th to 30th November, the Faculty of Geography and History will host an exhibition about citizensʼ mobilizations related to socio-environmental conflicts and territorial sustainability. The exhibition, which will show a cartography of socioenvironmental manifestations in Catalonia since 1972, offers morning and afternoon guided tours, a series of lectures and an expertsʼ round table.

Furthermore, within the Science Week, the PCB organizes two outreach scientific activities: an open day entitled “Come and do an express PhD!” and a series of scientific experiment workshops “Do Research!” at La Pedrera, supported by CatalunyaCaixa Foundation. Both initiatives invite participants to discover some of the experiments performed in the laboratories of the PCB and the UB.
