Dr Dídac Ramírez, professor of Mathematics for Economics and Finance, was re-elected rector of the UB, in the second round of the Rectorʼs Offices elections which took place yesterday, Tuesday 27th November. Dr Ramínez obtained 51.06 % of the weighted vote, against 48.94 % got by the other candidate, Dr Victòria Girona, professor of Physical Chemistry. According to these results, Dr Ramírez will continue in office in a second and last term of four years.

Dr Dídac Ramírez, professor of Mathematics for Economics and Finance, was re-elected rector of the UB, in the second round of the Rectorʼs Offices elections which took place yesterday, Tuesday 27th November. Dr Ramínez obtained 51.06 % of the weighted vote, against 48.94 % got by the other candidate, Dr Victòria Girona, professor of Physical Chemistry. According to these results, Dr Ramírez will continue in office in a second and last term of four years.

 
On the Election Day, which happened without incident, 64,577 people from the different university groups were able to vote. Finally, 10,421 people cast their votes, what represents 16.14 % of the total (a higher figure than the first roundʼs one, 14.94 %). Out of this total, 9,841 votes were for the candidates, 305 were blank and 275 spoiled.

The number of votes of each university group are the following: out of a total of 2,228 permanent professors who could cast, 1,636 voted (73.20 %, against 74.33 % of the first round); out of a total of 3,372 teaching and research staff, 1,092 voted (32.38 % against 32.33 % of the first round); out of a total of 56,653 students, 6,076 voted (10.72 % against 9.31 % of the first round); and out of a total of 2,324 administrative and service staff, 1,622 voted (69.79 % against 69.97 % of the first round).
 
Weighted vote
 
In this second round, the votes were distributed in the following way:
 
Dr Ramírez got 51.06 % of the weighted vote. 27.21 % came from permanent professors; 4.48 % came from teaching and research staff; 13.70 % from students; and 5.67 % from administrative and service staff.
 
Dr Girona obtained 48.94 % of the weighted vote. 23.79 % came from permanent professors; 4.52 % came from teaching and research staff; 6.30 % from students; and 4.33 % from administrative and service staff.
 
This is the third time that, according to the current regulations, the UB rector is elected by the university community through direct election and universal suffrage. The vote is weighted and its value depends on the university group to which you belong. Each group has a different percentage established in the UBʼs statutes: permanent professors computes 51 % of the total; other teaching and research staff, 9 % of the total; students, 30 %; and administrative and service staff, 10 %.

A second office leading the UB
 
Dídac Ramírez i Sarrió (Barcelona, 1946) holds the post of rector of the UB since 2008. He is professor at the Department of Mathematics for Economics, Finance and Actuarial Sciences of the Faculty of Economics and Business. He holds PhD degrees in Economics and Business Sciences and in Philosophy and Education Sciences from the UB. In 1973, he began his academic experience.
 
He is permanent member of the Royal Academy of Economic and Financial Sciences. He has wide experience in university management at the University of Barcelona, including the positions of vice-dean (1984-1989) and vice-rector for Economics and Administration (1990-1994). He has also held managing posts outside the UB: he has been president of the Catalan Society of Philosophy, treasurer of the FC Barcelona (2003), and member of the Board of Directors at the Quinta de Salut lʼAliança (2007).
 
He has published a great number of articles in journals and scientific monographs, supervised some doctoral theses, and been the main researcher in several national and European projects; he has also participated in different conferences about Economics and Philosophy. His last publication is a compilation book entitled Universitat, valors i societat.
