Researchers from the Department of Applied Mathematics and Analysis at the University of Barcelona and from the Computer Vision Centre at the Autonomous University of Barcelona won the third prize of the International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR) for their work “Multi Hand Pose Recognition System using Kinect Depth Sensor”.

The ICPR is a prestigious international conference about automatic pattern recognition. The work presented by the Research Group on Human Pose Recovery and Behaviour Analysis (HuPBA), by Dr Sergio Escalera, from the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Barcelona, was awarded with a certificate, a cheque for 2,000 dollars, a motherboard software and the regard of Microsoft. The award-winning project was presented within the international competition of artificial intelligence Microsoft Kinect devices, which took place in November in Japan.

Some automatic techniques for human behaviour recognition are being studied within vision and artificial intelligence fields of knowledge in order to apply them in human-machine interfaces. This is the case of Microsoft Kinect devices which combine colour information with infrared to get information about the environment and process it. Some new methods to describe the situation and recognize people, their position and their hand pose have been defined to apply them to medical image navigation.

This recognition system continues on research to be implemented it in real situations in the future. Some real situations may be: radio and television remote control, computer-assisted surgery, interactive games or disabled people care.
