On Tuesday 11th December, the professor of Civil Law at the UB and magistrate at the Constitutional Court, Encarna Roca i Trias, took office as a permanent member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation. Encarna Roca will occupy the seat that carries the 29th medal, unfilled since its previous holder, Manuel Díez de Velasco y Vallejo, left it.

During his speech, “Libertad y família”, Encarna Roca defended once again that, although marriage can be ended, family cannot; it is necessary to reorganize relationships among the different family members when a marriage comes to its end, and especially protect childrenʼs rights.

Graduated in Law in 1966 and doctor from the UB, Encarna Roca has been professor at the University since 1968; she holds the Duran i Bas Chair of Civil Law. She has focused her research on Catalan civil law and has specially devoted herself to family law and constitutional law, fields on which her publications are considered a reference. Moreover, in relation to university government, Roca has been vice-rector and general secretary of the UB.

From April 2005 to June 2012, she was magistrate at the civil division of the Spanish Supreme Court; and since them she has been magistrate at the Constitutional Court. She has been member of the Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation since 1980, member of the Legal Advisory Commission of the Government of Catalonia since 1983, and member of the Institute of Catalan Studies since 1995.
