On Monday 21st January, the Historic Building of the UB hosts the start-up of the International project Linking-Med-Gulf, led by the UB, which comes together universities from the European Union, the North of Africa and the Middle East, and the Persian Gulf. The objective is to develop long term partnerships between these regions and to promote synergies among higher education institutions and industry in these areas.

The opening event is chaired by the vice-rector for International Policy of the UB, Dr Maria Callejón, together with Lluís Jofre, director general for Universities, Ernest Urtasun, from the Union for the Mediterranean, and Mark Jeffrey, from the European Union Office in Barcelona. The first speakers are Mustafa Al-Adwan, secretary general of the Jordanian Ministry for Higher Education and Research, and the professor from the UB Antoni Segura, expert on the Arabic world, who gives the lecture “The ʻArab Springʼ and the new geopolitical context in the Mediterranean”. During the meeting the relationship among the higher education system of these three areas and the present challenges in fields such as quality, internationalization and graduatesʼ employability will be discussed. Some specific experiences of cooperation among universities in Europe, the Gulf and the Mediterranean Region will be also described.

The project Linking-Med-Gulf (Synergies and Innovation Linking Europe, the MENA region and the Gulf in Higher Education & Research), coordinated by the professor from the UB Ramon Torrent, is funded by the European Commission, within the European programme Erasmus Mundus Action 3. It is a continuation of the previous project JISER-MED (Joint Innovation & Synergies in Education) which aimed at establishing relations among Europe and the surrounding Mediterranean countries in the fields of higher education and research. In the case of Linking-Med-Gulf, the extent of the project is widened up to the Gulf countries. The objectives of the project are to improve the level of awareness of the Bologna Process among the participating universities, to discuss the relationship between the University and Industry in the different regions, and to disseminate successful experiences of joint actions in the fields of higher education and research.
