The article “Ranking de 2011 en producción y productividad en investigación de las universidades públicas españolas”, published on the journal Psicothema, states that the UB heads the ranking of research production in the State. The article is signed by the experts Gualberto Buela, M. Paz Bermúdez, Juan Carlos Sierra, Raúl Quevedo and Alejandro Guillén (University of Granada) and Ángel Castro (University of Zaragoza). The Complutense University of Madrid (UCM) and the University of Granada are also well-considered in scientific production.

This ranking, created in 2009, analyses the evolution of productivity of Spanish public universities taking into account seven indicators: articles published on the journals quoted by the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), research premiums, R+D projects, doctoral theses, scholarships for university teaching staff, PhD special awards, and patents (applied and obtained).

The article concludes that the ranking of articles published on the journals quotes by the JCR is headed by the University of Barcelona. In the case of research premiums, the universities which are in the top positions are the UB, the UCM and the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB). In relation to doctoral theses, the UB is the second university which produces a highest number of theses, and the UCM is the first one.

In the case of the scholarships for university teaching staff, the ranking is headed by the University of Granada, the UCM and the UB. In PhD special awards, the University of the Basque Country is in the first position, followed by the UB and the UAB. Finally, in the ranking of patents, the UB is the 7th university.

According to the authors of the article, “the raking shows that the ten universities with a greatest production are: the University of Barcelona, the Complutense University of Madrid, the University of Granada, the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the University of Valencia, the Technical University of Catalonia, The University of the Basque Country, the Technical University of Valencia, the Autonomous University of Madrid, and the University of Seville”. “This ranking —they add— is dynamic, in other words, it changes every year, considering the scientific production developed by each university teaching and research staff during the period analysed”.
