From 7th March to 30th April, the Historic Building of the UB becomes an extraordinary place that shows a selection of video art by top ranking international artists, complemented by two contemporary sculptures. The exhibition “Contemporary Art at the UB. Sorigué Foundation” is opened today, Thursday 7th March, at 6.30 p.m. Previously, at 6 p.m., the collaboration agreement between the UB and the Sorigué Foundation will be signed. The exhibition will be accompanied by three seminars in which noted professionals from the world of art and culture will hold a debate based around some of the main works on display.

One of the artists present is the North American Bill Viola, winner of the XXI International Award of Catalonia and considered to be the father of video art by international art critics. His creation The return can be observed and enjoyed.

The work Civilization, by Marco Brambilla, described by The New York Times as one of the most inspirational ones of recent years, will also form a part of the show together with Journey to the Moon by the noted multidisciplinary artist William Kentridge, Introduction, by Kuoi I Chen, and Prison and Bath, by Marina Alexeeva. The exhibition will also show two large format sculptures by Kiki Smith and Leonard McComb.

All of these works belong to the Sorigué Foundation which is exhibiting, for the first time, a selection of its collection in Barcelona. This is a unique opportunity to enjoy a link established between the University and modernity: an avant-guard artistic manifestation in an architectural space built in the 19th century, that is, the Historic Building of the UB.

Due to the great number of academic and institutional activities that the Historic Buiding hosts every day, the opening hours to visit some video arts can be limited. Opening hours can be checked on this link, which will be daily updated on the Virtual Museum of the UB.

Discussions about exhibited works with art and culture professionals

The exhibition will be accompanied by a seminar series, in which noted art and culture professionals will discuss about the exhibited works and open a round of questions to enable audienceʼs participation. Seminars will take place in the Ramón y Cajal room of the Historic Building at 7 p.m.

The first session happens today, 7th March. Dr Lourdes Cirlot, vice-rector for Institutional Relations and Culture of the UB, and Dr Rafael Argullol, expert on aesthetics and arts theories, will speak about the work The return, by Bill Viola.

During the two other sessions the debate will be focused, on one hand, on the work Civilization by Marco Brambilla, with the participation of Dr Herman Baschiron Mendolicchio and Daniel López del Rincón, and on the other hand, on the most remarkable aspects of the video art Journey to the moon, by William Kentridge, which will be analysed by José Enrique Monteverde.

Agreement between the University of Barcelona and the Sorigué Foundation

Within this exhibition, the Office of the Vice-Rector for Institutional Relations and Culture of the UB and the Sorigué Foundation will sign an agreement in order to establish collaboration in the field of culture and arts, knowledge transfer and social cooperation. The main objective of this agreement is to foster art dissemination, creativity and research in Humanities and other fields of knowledge by developing together a programme of activities.
