This year, to celebrate Saint Georgeʼs Day, I want to share with you a small treasure that the University of Barcelona has on its list of titles: Una ben petita antologia universitària, by Salvador Espriu. It is a collection of poems that Salvador Espriu gave to the University of Barcelona when he was granted an honorary doctorate in 1980. He selected the poems which would lead the university reader into his own world. Have a look to his genuine hand-written poems: letʼs remember them on Saint Georgeʼs Day! “Inici de càntic en el temple”, “El jardí dels cinc arbres” r “Quina petita pàtria” speak about the man he was, and to same extent we are, from the simplicity and accuracy of his verses that come to us vividly.

The then rector, Antoni M. Badia i Margarit, continued with gratitude this book. Today, I am really pleased to offer it to you, contributing then to all the events that the University of Barcelona is organising to celebrate the centenary of his birth: the presentation of this biography, a concert which relates his works with classical pieces, conferences and exhibitions on Espriu and his relationship with the University.

Espriu dedicated this anthology “to the magnanimous University of Barcelona”. And he added: “In gratitude for the countless benefits I have always received from it”. These words move me; the magnanimous history of this University is made up of small gestures and great values, as sincere and lasting as this.

Happy Saint Georgeʼs Day! Enjoy your readings!
