On URAP 2012, the UB is once again the only Spanish university honoured with the highest international category (A++)

Leiden Ranking 2013 is an international classification, headed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which assesses the scientific performance of 500 major worldwide universities. The ranking states that the UB is the leading university in Spain considering the indicators of scientific impact and collaboration. This classification is elaborated by the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) of Leiden University (Netherlands) and based on a set of bibliometric indicators, which analyse productivity, scientific impact of universities, and universities’ involvement in scientific collaboration, based on the data included on Web of Science of Thomson Reuters for the period 2008–2011.

According to Leiden classification, the UB is the top university in Spain in several rankings of indicators about scientific impact and inter-institutional collaboration. On scientific impact, it heads Spanish ranking as it has the best global results in number of publications (P), mean citation score (MCS), the average number of citations of a university’s publications, normalized for field differences and publication year (mean normalized citation score, MNCS), and the proportion of the publications of a university that, compared with other publications in the same field and in the same year, belong to the top 10 % most frequently cited (PPtop 10 %), which is considered the most emblematic bibliometric indicator on Leiden’s ranking. About institutional collaboration, the UB heads the proportion of the publications of a university that have been co-authored by two or more countries (proportion of international collaborative publications, PPint collab).

Leiden’s ranking by fields of science

The results by fields of science show that in Biomedicine and Health Sciences, the UB is the Spanish university which gets the best results in the indicators of scientific impact (number of publications, PPtop 10 %, etc.). About its scientific impact in Life and Earth Sciences, it holds the best position in the indicator MCS. Moreover, it is the Spanish leading university in proportion of inter-institutional collaborative publications (PPcollab). About its scientific impact on Social Sciences and Humanities, the UB is leader in MCS, MNCS and PPtop 10 %.

Leiden’s ranking includes fifteen Spanish universities among the best 500 around the world: the University of Barcelona (259th), the Technical University of Valencia (282th) , the University of Santiago de Compostela (317th), the Autonomous University of Barcelona (333th), the University of Valencia (336th), the Autonomous University of Madrid (356th), the University of Zaragoza (366th), the University of Granada (375th), the Technical University of Catalonia (396th), the University of Seville (402nd), the Complutense University of Madrid (406th), the University of Murcia (408th), the University of Oviedo (409th), the University of the Basque Country (411th) and the Technical University of Madrid (434th).
