The Secretariat of the Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education (AECHE), headquartered at the UB, as it was agreed on the first AECHE meeting, has already started working. The 1st AECHE, organised by the University of Barcelona, the Association of Arab Universities (AARU) and the European University Association (EUA), gathered more than 175 representatives of Arab and European universities at the Historic Building of the UB last May. The Secretariat has started working in order to organise the second annual meeting of AECHE, which takes place from 10 to 12 June in Amman (Jordan), at the Princess Sumaya University for Technology.

To date, a first meeting took place in Istanbul; it set the bases of the programme for the Second Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education. The new Conference will be structured into lectures and discussion sessions. One of the topics to be discussed is the creation of an exchange agreement between Arab countries, similar to the Erasmus Programme of the EU. The idea came up during the speech that HRH Princess Sumaya bint El Hassan of Jordan gave on the first AECHE meeting. She stressed that Arab countries need to foster research and to promote knowledge as a development and modernisation tool.

The Secretariat is affiliated with the Rector's Offices of the UB, and coordinated by the Office of the Vice-Rector for International Policy. Its mission is to promote relationships between Europe and Arab countries. Besides organising the conference in Jordan, the Secretariat has also created the new AECHE website.

Apart of establishing the Secretariat at the UB, the First Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education concluded that internationalization is a priority, as it benefits both, European and Arab education institutions; university associations, such as AARU and EUA, play a major role in promoting dialogue among academic communities, and it highlighted the importance of good practices and inter-university cooperation. It was also agreed that AARU and EUA will promote discussions with the European Commission to suggest how AECHE can strengthen the collaboration between Europe and Arab countries within the new programmes of the EU for the period 2014-2021.
