The Government of Catalonia and the Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation awarded Elías Campo, professor of Pathological Anatomy and research director at the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, with the National Award for Research 2013. Campo was honoured for the research he has carried out on leukaemiaʼs origin, development and diagnosis.

Campo has led the research on the complete sequencing of the genome and epigenome of patients with leukaemia. The research has enabled to identify the cells that cause leukaemia, discover new molecular mechanisms involved in its development and improve its diagnosis.

The National Award for Research honours those researchers who have recently contributed to the international progress of scientific fields in any area: human and social sciences, life and health sciences, engineering and technology and experimental sciences.

Elías Campo is one of the most cited Spanish researchers; he has published around 500 papers. In the field of medical practice, he has been affiliated to the Hospital Clínic de Barcelona since 1986. He heads the Human and Experimental Functional Oncomorphology Research Group at the August Pi i Sunyer Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBAPS). Moreover, Elías Campo is the main researcher of six projects, including a study of the chronic lymphocytic leukaemia genome, which was sequenced in 2011. Currently, he is president-elect of the European Hemopathology Association and member of the Executive Committee of the International Cancer Genome Consortium, and he collaborates with the International Lymphoma Study Group.
