The University of Barcelona and Al-Quds University, together with UB Solidarity Foundation and the NGO NOVACT, supported by the Palestinian grassroots organization Popular Struggle Coordination Committee, have created the first on-line education program in nonviolent conflict resolution: International Law and Nonviolent Popular Struggle, Organising for Social Change. Its setting up coincided with the Human Rights Day celebrations and the events organised to pay tribute to Nelson Mandela. The education program, devoted to human rights defence, also pays tribute to Nelson Mandela, one of the most charismatic defenders of Human Rights. UB held a special relationship with him as his wife, Graça Machel, received an honorary doctorate from the University in 2008.

The director of UB Solidarity Foundation, Xavier López, explains: “It is an advanced, interdisciplinary study of nonviolent conflict resolution, popular struggle, social organization, and advocacy strategies”. In this sense, the program goes more deeply into quality, effectiveness and sustainable impact of conflict resolution programmes and human right campaigns. It is designed for people active in on-going campaigns involved in social justice in the West-Bank, Gaza or Palestine ʼ48. It is also addressed to leaders of popular struggle movements, grassroots organizers, middle to senior level policy and decision makers; political representatives, etc.

The university extension course (11 credits ECTS) takes place from 10 February to 31 May 2014. It will be taught by leading scholars and practitioners of strategic nonviolent action and authorities of International Law, coordinated by David Bondia, professor from the Department of International Public Law of the UB and member of the Board of Trustees of UB Solidarity Foundation.

This program is possible thanks to the agreement signed in May between UB and Al-Quds University, within the 1st Arab-Euro Conference on Higher Education (AECHE).
