The University of Barcelona has just published the Mobile Services Guide, recently approved by the Executive Council. The main objective of the guide is to advise UBʼs units how to create and develop mobile applications within the institution. The document, prepared by the Area for Information and Communication Technologies and the Corporate Image and Publicity Unit, is available on UBʼs intranet, on the Resources section.

The Guide will give a coherent and unified answer to the increasing number of mobile applications created by UB services and units and the UB Group. Taking as a model the Mobile Services Guide of the Government of Catalonia, the document includes some general considerations that must be taken into account in order to set up mobile applications projects, as well as a series of technical recommendations and some suggestions to adequate mobile services to UBʼs corporate image.

The guide includes an application form for the creation of mobile apps at UB. Those interested in developing an app must fill and sent it to the Corporate Image and Publicity Unit. Then, the Area for Information and Communication Technologies and the Corporate Image and Publicity Unit will advise and support them in order to ensure that the project meets the requirements of the University of Barcelona.

In order to launch an app developed by its centres, departments, services, units, etc., the University of Barcelona has publication profiles on Google Play and App Store, which are managed by the Area for Information and Communication Technologies. The University is now working on a website that will give information about all the apps created at UB, and the ones in which the institution collaborated, to make their search and download easier for users.

Some UB apps
In June 2012, the University of Barcelona released the app UB Avisos de Qualificacions, available for systems Android (2.2 and up) and  iOS (4.2 and up); more than 20,000 users have already downloaded it. The app Gaia App has also been launched recently; it is available for systems iOS (6.1 and up) and it provides information about the mission of the satellite Gaia. Moreover, UB has collaborated in the development of other apps, for instance the Guia de conversa Universitària, created the Government of Catalonia and available for systems Android (2.1 and up) and iOS (4.3 and up).
