From 5 to 9 May, the Faculty of Law of the University of Barcelona hosts the seventh edition of the international Study Space workshops that Georgia State University (GSU) organises and funds in different cities around the world. The edition that takes place in Barcelona is focused on adequate housing options. Using Barcelona as a case study, participants will explore issues such as the barriers to affordable housing, housing discrimination and homelessness.

Julian Jurgensmeyer, professor from GSU, leads the workshop. Jane Ball, professor of Law at the University of Newcastle, speaks about the right to housing in France and the United States. Besides academic sessions, participants will visit Incasol headquarters, attend meetings of the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages and visit the facilities of different social services in the city.

Study Space workshops examine and provide recommendations for a defined set of challenges facing the host city, in this case Barcelona. Study Space promotes active learning and problem-solving through research, site visits and group discussions with local academics, nongovernment organizations and government officials. Workshop results are published in journals distributed to an international audience. Barcelonaʼs edition has the collaboration of Barcelona City Council, Terrassa City Council, the Housing Agency of Catalonia, INCASOL, the Platform for People Affected by Mortgages and the journal Revista de Derecho Urbanístico y Medio Ambiente, which has already showed its interest in publishing this yearʼs results in a Spanish-English bilingual edition in 2015.
Previous Study Space workshops took place in Panama, Bogota, Denver, Medellin, Rio de Janeiro and Istanbul.
