The University of Barcelona tops once again the Rankings I-UGR 2014 of Spanish Universities according to Fields and Scientific Disciplines, a classification based on the research published by Spanish public and private universities on high-impact and high-visibility international journals for the period 2009-2013. This is the fifth edition of these rankings, which are developed by a group of experts form the universities of Granada and Navarra.

The University of Barcelona tops once again the Rankings I-UGR 2014 of Spanish Universities according to Fields and Scientific Disciplines, a classification based on the research published by Spanish public and private universities on high-impact and high-visibility international journals for the period 2009-2013. This is the fifth edition of these rankings, which are developed by a group of experts form the universities of Granada and Navarra.

These rankings give information about twelve scientific fields and thirty-seven disciplines in order to observe which areas are universities' strong points. Universities are classified according to the IFQ2A-index, which synthesizes six bibliometric indicators for research production and impact, obtained from Thomson Reuters databases.

The University of Barcelona is the top Spanish university in six out of twelve fields: Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Biological Sciences, Medicine and Pharmacy, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Psychology and Education and Other Social Sciences. Moreover, it occupies the second position in Physics and Engineering, and the third position in Mathematics.

Concerning scientific disciplines, the University of Barcelona tops eleven out of thirty-seven scientific disciplines: Chemistry, Vegetal and Animal Biology, Biochemisty and Molecular Biology, Microbiology and Virology, Pharmacy and Toxicology, Medicine, Neuroscience, Geoscience, Materials Sciences, Political Science and Psychology.

Like in previous editions, these rankings also give information about the research activity carried out by autonomous communities. Considering the results obtained by public universities, Catalonia is the most outstanding autonomous community.
